VMware Workstation 12 Player (formerly known as VMware Player Pro) is a streamlined offering of VMware Workstation 12 Pro that is ready for Windows 10, offers enhanced 3-D graphics support and improved virtual machine performance. With its intuitive interface and easy setup, VMware Workstation 12 Player is another option for IT professionals to deliver a corporate virtual desktop to employees, contractors or customers.

Key new features in Workstation 12 Player include:
Enhanced Operating System Compatibility:
VMware 12 Player will run on the latest release of Windows including Windows 10 and will support prevalent operating systems like Windows XP and Windows 7 in a virtual environment so users can continue to run legacy applications as long as they need.

Greater Hardware Compatibility:
VMware 12 Player will be optimized to run on today’s modern hardware including the latest PC laptops and high-resolution tablets including 4K displays.

Updated VMware Compatibility:
VMware Workstation 12 Player will be able to run restricted virtual machines created by VMware Workstation 12 Pro or VMware Fusion 8 Pro. Restricted virtual machines secure corporate desktops with encryption, runtime password protection, USB access restriction, isolation between the host and guest OS, and time limitation.

Performance improvements for suspending and resuming encrypted virtual machines.
Support for 4K monitors with high resolution UI.
Support for multiple monitors with different DPI settings.
Echo cancellation for voice and video calls with Microsoft Lync and Skype.
Added USB 3.0 support to Windows 7 virtual machines (with the latest Intel USB driver).
Improved standard installer.
Respect left-handed mouse setting on Windows host.

The following features have reached end of life in Workstation 12 Player and have been removed:
  • Unity mode on Linux guest and host operating systems
