Windows 8.1 introduces new manageability, mobility, security, user experience and networking capabilities that will be available later this year - with the goal of offering customers the best business tablets and versatile modern business PCs driven by the most powerful operating system designed for today’s modern businesses.

- Best business tablets and PCs: Enhanced user experience (improved multi-tasking, multi-monitor support, and mouse and keyboard navigation), boot to desktop, new Search experience, support for latest hardware innovation (processors, InstantGo, displays, smaller tablets, NFC, biometrics)
- Windows apps for business: Develop, deploy, and manage new mobile apps easier and faster, across PC and Phone (commonality of app platform, same tools, consistent user experience, easy portability)
- Mobility for the enterprise: Enhanced mobile broadband, NFC ‘tap to pair’ printing, Wi-Fi Direct printing, native Miracast wireless display, auto-triggered VPN with built-in clients, broadband tethering
- Empower Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Improved IT controls (Start screen layout and consistency), remote business data removal, Open MDM (OMA-DM support for Windows Intune and third-party MDM,) workplace join, work folders
- Enterprise grade security: Modern access controls (fingerprint-based biometrics, multi-factor authentication using virtual smart cards), malware resistance (Windows Defender with network behavior monitoring and Internet Explorer 11 scan of binary extensions)

System requirements for Windows 8.1
Windows 8.1 works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 8:
- Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
- RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
- Free hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
- Graphics card: MicrosoftDirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
Additional requirements to use certain features:
- For 64-bit installations of Windows 8.1 Enterprise, your CPU must also support CompareExchange16b, PrefetchW and LAHF/SAHF.
- To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch.
- To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768, and a Microsoft account.
- To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.
- Internet access (ISP fees might apply)
- Some features such as touch and Client Hyper-V may require advanced or Windows 8 certified hardware
