I am trying to install the trial of SharePoint Server 2013 but couldn't enter the mentioned product key as it gives message 'N' is not a valid character in product key.

The eval key worked fine. When i copied and pasted it, it said S is not a valid character. Once I typed it in, it went through.
So you need to install a Windows server 2008 or above,
and on top of that another VM that runs SQL Server 2008 or above?
